چکیده

Problems concerning electron transport in mesoscopic structures and nanostructures are considered in the paper. The electrical conductance of nanowires has been measured in a simple experimental system. Investigations have been performed in air at room temperature measuring the conductance between two vibrating metal wires with a standard oscilloscope. The conductance quantization in units of G0 = 2e /h = (12.9 kΩ) up to five quanta of conductance has been observed for nanowires formed in many metals. The explanation of this universal phenomena is the formation of a nanometer-sized wire (nanowire) between macroscopic metallic contacts which have induced, in accordance with the theory proposed by Landauer, the quantization of conductance. The thermal problems in nanowires are also discussed in the papers.

Impact of Silicon Wafer Orientation on the Performance of Metal Source/Drain MOSFET in Nanoscale Regime: a Numerical Study

A comprehensive study of Schottky barrier MOSFET (SBMOSFET) scaling issue is performed to determine the role of wafer orientation and structural parameters on the performance of this device within Non-equilibrium Green's Function formalism. Quantum confinement increases the effective Schottky barrier height (SBH). (100) orientation provides lower effective Schottky barrier height in compa...

Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of electrical and thermal properties of a quantum dot ring geometry

We investigate Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the electrical current through a strongly correlated quantum dot embedded in an arbitrary scattering geometry in the linear and nonlinear regime. We also study the temperature and ux dependence of the thermopower S and nd that it changes sign with temperature. At the temperature where S(T0) = 0, the thermal properties are strongly ux dependent as com...

Theory of the pairbreaking superconductor-metal transition in nanowires

We present a detailed description of a zero temperature phase transition between superconducting and diffusive metallic states in very thin wires due to a Cooper pair breaking mechanism. The dissipative critical theory contains current reducing fluctuations in the guise of both quantum and thermally activated phase slips. A full cross-over phase diagram is computed via an expansion in the inver...

Structure, stability, and quantum conductivity of small diameter silicon nanowires.

Structures and energetics of various types of silicon nanowires have been investigated using both quantum and classical molecular dynamics simulations to determine the most stable forms. The tetrahedral type nanowires have been found to be the most stable and, surprisingly, the polycrystalline forms of nanowires, while having the smallest surface to bulk ratio, are found to be the least stable....

Probing Quantum Phase Slips in Superconducting Nanowires Modified Using High Bias Voltage Pulses by Thomas Aref

Quantum phase slips (QPS) or the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of a nanowire’s order parameter through an activation energy barrier have remained the subject of intense debate for many years. They are expected to occur at low enough temperature where thermally activated phase slips (TAPS) have been frozen out in analogy with Josephson junctions where the macroscopic tunneling of phase at ...
